"How You Can Make A Wise
Investment"
Are you a homeowner with money invested or some spare cash? A significant lowering in the price of rooftop
solar
power
units in recent months has turned the government's feed-in tariff scheme into one of the most
lucrative financial propositions for households with the right sort of
property
.
The scheme was introduced in April 2010, when the government introduced generous
feed-in tariffs
to encourage households to install solar photovoltaic systems. Back then, anyone spending, say,
£13,000 up front to fit a 2.5
kWp
system to their home was paid 41.3p per kilowatt hour (kWh) generated – enough to earn them a
typical annual income of £900 a year in payments, on top of a £140-a-year saving in reduced electricity
bills.
It was described as a good investment because payments for each unit of electricity generated were
guaranteed for 25 years, paid tax-free, and set to rise each year in line with inflation.
However, the recent cuts starting on December 12th to the Feed in Tariff mean that the
returns on a solar system which were well over 15% are now not quite so high - more like 11% with a much lower
investment required.
This is still an almost unbeatable return, it’s also an eco-friendly investment as well as
being tax free and inflation linked.
Not only do you get this return but also the
savings from the increase in electricity prices during the 25 year period. The Government’s own calculations from
the Department for Energy and Climate change show that these have to rise 26% by 2015 just to meet planned carbon
reduction targets.
Homeowners need to act now to take advantage of this
as even more stringent rules are being introduced on 1st April 2012 whereby minimum energy efficiency
requirements for all houses to be able to install solar PV - this will be an EPC rating of "C" or higher. For some properties this could be very
expensive.
